Castle
Castle of Gjon Boçari
Compact 17th-century hill fortress above Tragjas, valued for its clear rectangular plan, polygonal towers, and views over routes to Dukat and Llogara.
The Castle of Gjon Boçari is a compact 17th-century fortress near Tragjas in the Vlorë region, built on a dominant hill above the Dukat plain, Tragjas, and Radhimë. The Albanian Wikipedia article, citing Albanian monument literature, describes the castle as controlling the coast and the roads leading toward the Llogara Pass and the pass of Shën Gjergj. That strategic position is the main reason the site is interesting for travellers: from a small fortified rectangle, the landscape opens toward the Ionian coast, mountain passes, and the historic routes between inland Labëria and the sea.
Architecturally, the castle is unusually clear and easy to imagine. The Albanian source describes a rectangular enclosure of about 30 by 18 metres, with two polygonal towers on the northern and eastern corners. The only entrance is placed in the middle of one of the narrow sides. The curtain walls are about 1.80 metres thick, the tower walls are similar in width, and the wall height reaches about 4 metres up to the guard walk. The parapet survives only in traces. Two pairs of stairways built into the thickness of the northwestern and southeastern walls led up to the guard walk. The towers were open toward the inside of the fortification, functioning almost as continuations of the surrounding walls rather than closed independent towers.
The most useful historical name connected with the monument is Gjon Boçari, preserved in the castle’s name. The Albanian article also notes that Austrian archaeologist Carl Patsch described the castle in 1904 and observed extended building ruins north of it. Patsch suggested that the garrison may have stayed in tents or light wooden structures. Albanian monument scholarship compares the castle’s architectural elements with monastery enclosures from the second half of the 17th century and says that a possible Ali Pasha of Tepelena phase still needs study; it also notes that the castle does not show typical elements of Ali Pasha’s defensive constructions. That makes the site more nuanced than a simple “Ali Pasha castle”: it is a verified 17th-century cultural monument with later questions still open.

Visitor Information
The castle is near Tragjas in the Vlorë region, so it is most practical by car from Vlorë, Orikum, Radhimë, or the coastal road toward Llogara. Use the coordinates for the final approach and check local road or footpath conditions before setting out. Available public information does not provide a stable ticket price, opening schedule, or staffed visitor facilities. Expect a ruin with uneven ground, exposed masonry, sun, and limited services; wear sturdy shoes, bring water, and avoid climbing unstable walls.
